A Week in Scotland - Travel Sketching Day Three, Rainy Day

17 Sep 2018

It was raining on day three so we drove to Stirling and had a wander...to a cafe for a cuppa and cake. They had a group of guitarists meeting for "Coffee and Chords" so we got to hear a bit of their music before we headed off.

We had planned to go to Stirling Castle, but thought that the views wouldn't be great in the rain. Same with the Wallace Monument, and I had already visited both places previously. So we drove to Alloa to find Alloa Tower. It's National Trust for Scotland which meant we got in free with our National Trust membership.

There's a painting of one of the Earls of Mar with his family. He fell out with his eldest son so asked the artist to paint him out. I think he may have originally been climbing a tree because the top right hand side of the painting was re-worked. There's a top hat in the tree now and another son is shooting an arrow at it. You can see in a certain light where the painting has been re-done. It's said that on the anniversary of a fire which destroyed the house that was built onto the tower, the painting clouds over and there's a smell of burning! Spookily that anniversary was two days after we were there. Thankfully, as it would've spooked my son if it was that day.

It was still raining when we left the tower so we just sat in the car at Gartmorn Dam Country Park to eat our late lunch. We had an early return to the holiday apartment and I  really didn't want to miss a day of sketching, so I painted the view from the patio door with the teapot and mug on the table. A representation of a rainy day. The pink reflection in the silver pot was my bright pink top!
