A week in Scotland - Travel sketching day five, Loch Ard

1 Oct 2018

On day five we drove to Doune and visited Doune Castle near Stirling. This is where they filmed some of the Monty Python film "The Life of Brian" and, I hadn't realised, where they filmed some of the "Outlander" scenes. From photos, I thought I would get a good view of the castle nestled in the landscape so I took my large watercolour block. Unfortunately, the castle had some scaffolding on it, and it was just kind of stuck on top of a hill. Anyway, I couldn't really get to a picturesque place for painting so I didn't do a sketch.

It was an interesting visit none-the-less but we only spent the morning there. Another dull day so we decided to head back to the holiday apartment. Just across the road from the entrance, was a water activity place on the loch. So we walked down and hired a canoe. It was surprisingly still and mild on Loch Ard, which was very pleasant. Obviously I couldn't sketch but I tried to take in the atmosphere and observe my surroundings. The water was shimmering silver and inky black.

After our hours paddling, we popped back to the holiday apartment and I collected my paints. I sat on one of the benches in the hotel's lovely gardens and sketched the view across to the loch. I left out a couple of the trees as I wanted to see the water. That's the great thing about painting, you can take down trees without actually chopping them down!
