A week in Portugal - Travel Sketching Day Four

25 Jun 2018

Day four of sketching in Portugal saw us visiting the beautiful Palace of Monserrate. Another palace in Sintra, which meant another bit of the mountain! The palace has different styles of gardens ranging from a Mexican garden to a rose garden. There were exotic yuccas and cacti mixed in with tree ferns. There were also cork oaks - Portugal is the world's largest cork producer and these trees are fascinating with their highly textured bark. Many of them had ferns actually growing in the bark.

The actual palace is very beautiful, inside and out. Inside is such delicate and intricate plasterwork, it reminded me of icing on a cake. There had just been a wedding ceremony in the circular music room which is a mirror image of the circular entrance hall.

Unfortunately there was work being done to the outside of the palace, but when you're painting you can just leave out white sheeting! We found this bench opposite a view of the building, had some lunch and I painted this. I feel like I didn't quite get the colour of the building correct though.
