Watercolour Commission of Brinkburn Priory

15 Jun 2016

At last I can share this watercolour I painted as a commission. The customer wanted a unique wedding gift for her friend. I suggested a watercolour of the couple's venue which was the beautiful Brinkburn Priory in Northumberland. The customer took a trip up there and sent me some photos of the chapel.

I did three quick sketches of different angles for her to choose from. From one side of the chapel you have lovely open space but the chapel doesn't look fantastic so she chose the other elevation as she liked the tracery around the windows.

I sent the final drawing for approval before I started painting. Originally she just wanted the chapel and not the buildings to the right. I sent a photo of this but explained that it looked a little bare on the right without anything to balance the trees up. I suggested that painting in the buildings in a light wash would look much better. I got the go-ahead and this is the result.

The painting is 10x8 in a double 12x10 mount. The customer was thrilled with it. She had it framed after she collected it. She messaged me after the wedding to say "I didn't see them open it but she was gushing when she rang with how much she loved it."
