Acrylic Painting of Mount Rundle

5 Jul 2016

The next painting in my series of Mount Rundle in Alberta, Canada, is an acrylic on canvas. I feel like I'm still getting to grips with acrylic and how I want to work with it so this was a bit of an experiment as well. I also wanted to capture a different feel to it so I combined two pictures together.

I used the straight photo of the mountain to get the shape of the top right (or almost right!) and a sunset sky which I'd photographed from my window across our street! I love that you can use different elements of different scenes to create a totally different piece of work.

I am also really happy with the effect I got in the sky. I am trying to use more paint so I don't skimp on the texture.

I think it's really interesting seeing the three images side by side.

The lakes that Mount Rundle looks over are called Vermillion Lakes, presumably because of the colour they turn when it's sunset.

Looking at the finished painting, I love the sky and if I were to do it again I'd probably bring the mountain lower in the picture and smaller to have more emphasis on the sky. Saying that, I'm pretty happy with it.
